Ajay Bhalla, a former bureaucrat, has been appointed as the Governor of Manipur, replacing Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who held the position since July 31 this year. Bhalla, a retired IAS officer of the 1984 batch from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, previously served as India’s Home Secretary until August 2024. His appointment comes amid ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, which has intensified since May 2023.
In addition, Arif Mohammad Khan, the Governor of Kerala, known for his conflicts with the state government, has been moved to Bihar, replacing Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who will now take over as Kerala’s Governor.
Other notable changes include the appointment of General Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh, former Army Chief, as the new Governor of Mizoram, succeeding Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, who has been appointed as the Governor of Odisha. These appointments were approved by President Droupadi Murmu, along with the acceptance of Raghubar Das’s resignation as Odisha’s Governor.
The new Governors will take office on the dates they assume their respective positions.
