Haryana Man Sells Land and Crops to Pay Rs. 3 Crore Alimony To End 44-Year Marriage

A 70-year-old man from Karnal, Haryana, has finally agreed to end his 44-year of marriage for permanent alimony of Rs. 3.07 crores after fighting a 18-year-long legal battle. To fulfill the monetary obligation, he sold away his land and crops- even the harvest of the sugarcane.
Couple: Married on August 27, 1980, have two daughters and a son, but have been living apart since they started living separate lives that began deteriorating in the year 2006. The husband had filed for divorce in 2006, citing mental cruelty, but his petition was rejected. In 2013, he appealed to the High Court, and after 11 years, it referred the matter to the Mediation and Conciliation Centre to explore a compromise this November.

The husband, wife, and their children agreed to dissolve the marriage during the mediation process. The husband paid Rs. 3.07 crore as alimony. He did this by paying a demand draft of Rs. 2.16 crore and Rs. 50 lakh in cash after selling his sugarcane crop.

The court confirmed that, with the alimony paid, the wife and children would have no further claims against the husband. “Even after the death of the first party, the second and third parties (children) will not lay any claim over the estate that may be left by the first party at the time of his death, which will devolve upon as per succession, excluding the second and third party,” the court ruled.
