A remarkable act of generosity was when a mother from Dehradun donated the body of her two-and-a-half-day-old daughter, Saraswati, to the Doon Medical College Hospital. The baby girl was born through a caesarean section, but an examination revealed that she had a heart condition. Saraswati was placed in the NICU, but she passed away on December 10.
With the Dadhichi Dehdaan Samiti and the hospital staff guiding them, the parents agreed to the possibility of donating the body. It was a decision of a lifetime, in that the parents became the first newborn to donate their body to the region. Saraswati’s body was donated to the anatomy department of the hospital.
Dr. Anurag Agarwal, Medical Superintendent of Doon Hospital, said that on 8th December, a baby girl from a family in Haridwar was brought to the hospital with breathing problems, which turned out to be due to heart-related problem. The doctors tried their best, but the baby girl succumbed to her illness on 10th December. The Mohan Foundation and Dadhichi Dehdaan Samiti motivated the parents to give the body to the cause, through which medical people would be able to increase their knowledge of the human anatomy.
Dr. Agarwal applauded the decision by the parents, saying that even though the baby could only live for two days, his donation would help in medical research and education. On this extraordinary act of the couple, the hospital authorities presented the parents with a plant.
