G7 Leaders Extended Support For Syria’s Political Transition

The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) major democracies expressed their commitment to supporting a peaceful political transition in Syria, following the end of Bashar al-Assad’s nearly 24-year authoritarian rule. A statement issued on Thursday emphasized the G7’s readiness to back a process that would lead to “credible, inclusive, and non-sectarian governance.”

The G7 outlined key principles for the transition, highlighting the importance of upholding the rule of law, ensuring human rights, particularly women’s rights, and safeguarding the protection of all Syrians, including religious and ethnic minorities. The statement further stressed the necessity of transparency, accountability, and respect for Syria’s territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty.

The group emphasized that they would fully support a future Syrian government that meets these standards and arises from a legitimate and inclusive political process. The leaders also reiterated their call for all parties involved to prioritize national unity and avoid divisive actions that could destabilize the country further.
