Mohammed Siraj Fined 20 Percent Match Fee, Travis Head Penalized for Adelaide Clash

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday, December 9, announced disciplinary actions against Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head due to their on-field dispute during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide. Siraj faced a 20% reduction from his match fee, while Head avoided any financial penalties but was reprimanded for his verbal exchange with the Indian pacer.

Both players were each handed one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.

“Siraj has been fined 20% of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching article 2. 5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel regarding ‘using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal,’” the ICC announced.

“Head was also penalized for infringing Article 2. 13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which concerns the ‘abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match,’” the statement added.

The occurrence unfolded after Siraj directed an expletive-laden farewell at Head, who had previously struck him for a six. Siraj then bowled a yorker that dismissed Head for a well-played 140. The dismissal ignited a fierce exchange as Head reacted to the provocation, escalating the situation.

The Adelaide Oval crowd, displeased with Siraj’s send-off towards their local hero, expressed their discontent by booing the Indian bowler.
