Trust is often the first step to betrayal, as seen in the case of a 20-year-old woman from Bengaluru. She fell victim to her boyfriend’s blackmail scheme, losing ₹2.5 crore of her family’s money. Believing his promise to marry her, she was manipulated through intimate videos he used to blackmail her.
How It Started
The woman met Mohan Kumar, her boyfriend, in boarding school. Although they lost touch, they reconnected years later and fell in love. Kumar assured her of marriage and took her on trips. During these trips, he recorded private videos, convincing her they were only for himself.
The Blackmail And Extortion Begin
However, Kumar later used the videos to blackmail her. He ensured his face wasn’t visible in some clips and threatened to upload them online. Scared, the woman withdrew ₹1.25 crore from her grandmother’s account and transferred it to accounts Kumar specified.
Escalating Demands
Kumar didn’t stop there. He demanded more money as extortion, forcing her to give him ₹1.32 crore in cash on different occasions. Additionally, he took expensive jewelry, luxury watches, and a high-end car. He even made her transfer funds to his father’s account several times.
Finally, the woman gathered the courage to approach the police. She filed a complaint, leading to Kumar’s arrest. “When Kumar continued to make demands, the victim gathered the courage to approach the police,” said an official.
Investigation and Recovery
Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayanand called the crime well-planned. “The accused extorted ₹2.57 crore, of which ₹80 lakh has been recovered,” he stated. The police are now investigating to recover the remaining amount and uncover more details about Kumar’s actions.
This case shows how trust can be exploited and underscores the importance of seeking help to end such schemes.
