‘Reclaim Virginity’: This Rs 16 Lakh Surgery Might Be the Answer

A 23-year-old Brazilian influencer and model, Ravena Hanniely, recently declared that she is to undergo hymenoplasty – cosmetic surgery to restore the hymen to its pre-bleed state. This surgery, which is to cost more than $19,000 (approximately ₹16 lakh), is symbolic of a new chapter for Hanniely in terms of her life.

A Personal and Symbolic Decision

For Hanniely, who has more than 2.5 lakh followers on Instagram, this process is highly symbolic. While speaking with Jam Press, she mentioned, “The procedure means something very special to me. I want to become a virgin again.”. This is for my self-esteem and personal reasons that have always been important to me.” She believes the surgery will not only enhance her physical well-being but also offer psychological benefits, stressing, “It’s about how a woman feels and what she wants for herself.”

Preparation for the Procedure

Though the surgery has yet to be scheduled, Hanniely is committed to an easy process. She also intends to be strict with the suggestions of doctors, such as not exerting her body, restricting intimacy for a specific period, and wearing comfortable clothing after the surgery.

Medical Issues and Ethical Concerns

Though hymenoplasty is an established cosmetic procedure, it has generated controversy among medical professionals. According to Dr. Hana Salusollia, CEO of the London-based Medisonal Clinic, though hymenoplasty is safe when done by competent surgeons, it does carry risks such as infection, scarring, and dissatisfaction with the outcome.

Moreover, Dr. Salusollia said the point of ethics in performing such a procedure was an appeal for patients to make such choices independent of societal pressures. “Patients should feel empowered to make their own choices. The informed consent is very essential because these decisions usually converge along with cultural and psychological dimensions,” she said.

Advocating Respect for Personal Choices

Some people might even criticise this choice of mine. But I tell you honestly, this is a matter of respect for individual freedom. Sadly not everyone will understand or be able to accept such intimate decisions. Let’s stop judging and just respect such decisions,” says Hanniely.
Hanniely’s search for hymenoplasty underlines the big issues: discussions over body autonomy, the rules of society, and the right to empowerment in personal matters.
