An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 struck the Mulugu district of Telangana on Wednesday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at around 7:27 am and was centered in the Mulugu region, at a depth of 40 km.
The NCS reported the earthquake details as follows: “EQ of M: 5.3, On: 04/12/2024 07:27:02 IST, Lat: 18.44 N, Long: 80.24 E, Depth: 40 Km, Location: Mulugu, Telangana.” Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, and further information is awaited. The tremors were also felt in Hyderabad.
India is divided into four seismic zones—Zone II, Zone III, Zone IV, and Zone V—based on the level of seismic activity. Zone V experiences the highest seismic activity, while Zone II has the lowest. Telangana is classified under Zone II, a low-intensity seismic zone.
Approximately 11% of the country falls under Zone V, 18% in Zone IV, 30% in Zone III, and the remaining area is in Zone II. Around 59% of India’s landmass is prone to earthquakes of varying intensities.
