Chandigarh becomes first city to implement new criminal laws

Chandigarh achieved the historic milestone of becoming the first city in India to fully implement the new Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bhartiya Sakshya Sanhita in lieu of the colonial-era criminal laws. Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared this achievement, hailing Chandigarh for taking up the new legal structure so quickly and efficiently within a mere five months.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the importance of delivering time-bound justice through the new criminal justice system. He highlighted the unique and technology-driven framework introduced by these laws, aimed at ensuring efficiency and fairness in the administration of justice.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the administration and people of Chandigarh, saying that these new laws bring a new era with them because they are eradicating the old and slavery-oriented provisions from the legal system of India. He said that the city has become a benchmark for the rest of the nation to follow the modern and progressive legal reforms.

It is hoped that when fully implemented, the Chandigarh model will become a catalyst for other states and Union Territories to work towards fulfilling the vision of a self-reliant and just India.
