Amid rumors of a rift between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, a documentary on their life away from the UK royal spotlight is set to release in Germany next month. Award-winning filmmaker Ulrike Grunewald, who traveled to Montecito, California, to capture their experiences, shared that the couple has been living a “very isolated” life, despite being in an area known for its vibrant social scene.

Grunewald noted that, although Harry and Meghan aimed to be global benefactors creating tangible change, they have not met those expectations so far. “The cultural life here is very lively but often happens in closed circles, and Harry and Meghan rarely participate. They seem to have isolated themselves a lot,” Grunewald said in an interview with The Mail.

Neighbor Richard Mineards added that the couple is seldom seen in town, with Meghan occasionally spotted at the farmers’ market or walking a dog, but generally keeping a low profile. “It’s a shame. This is a lovely place,” Mineards commented.

The documentary will also explore whether the couple has achieved “freedom” and financial independence since stepping back from royal duties. Grunewald observed that Harry and Meghan’s strategy has shifted over time. “They started out as a power duo in their new life in California. Now they mainly appear separately, as they were unable to create a functioning image together,” she said. “After four years, the results are very mixed.”

Recent reports have suggested a “professional separation” between the couple, with Meghan reportedly focusing on launching the American Riviera Orchard next year, while Harry plans the second edition of the Invictus Games in Canada. The first installment in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 2023 received positive reviews but cost German taxpayers 40 million euros (Rs 357 crore), which may have affected its reputation.
