Bumrah, Siraj & Mystery Pacer: Shastri Names All-rounder To Fill Shardul Thakur’s Shoes In Perth

Former head coach of India, Ravi Shastri has announced his picks for India’s fast bowling line-up for the opening Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy that starts next week. Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri reveals his top choices for the series opener in Perth focusing on pace-friendly conditions.

“I think the three I would pick straight away is Akash Deep, [Mohammed] Siraj and [Jasprit] Bumrah and then they [selectors] have to see the balance,” he said.

India’s playing XI has been a subject of hot debate, especially after skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed that he would not be available for the first game due to personal reasons following the birth of his son. In addition, the non-inclusion of experienced pacer Mohammed Shami has added to the concern regarding the side’s bowling.

He shared his view on the situation in Perth and advised to not have two spinners. “I would go with one spinner…I was in Perth last year when Pakistan played Australia. And in those conditions, to have two spinners is a luxury. You need pace because that track has pace and bounce. And you need the bowlers to exploit it and keep the pressure on the batsman,” he explained.

Shastri also mooted the concept of Nitesh Reddy as an all-rounder, comparing him with Shardul Thakur. “Nitesh Reddy has to do a job like Shardul Thakur did as the fourth seamer. He can bat a bit, give the bowlers a little bit of respite so that they can bowl in short spells…and be someone who will have to be good for those eight to 10 overs that he bowls,” he noted.

With a 0-3 loss to New Zealand in hand, India will look to stage something of a comeback against Australia in five-match contest.
