Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday. This marked the second stop of his three-nation tour. He is attending the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit. Indian delegates, led by Ambassador Suresh Reddy, welcomed him warmly at the airport.
PM Modi expressed his excitement in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to take part in the G20 Summit. I look forward to the Summit deliberations and fruitful talks with various world leaders.” He also shared photos of his airport reception.

Indian Diaspora Shows Excitement
The Indian diaspora greeted PM Modi with great enthusiasm. Many waved Indian flags and carried his pictures. They expressed pride in meeting the leader of the world’s largest democracy.
One member of the diaspora told, “We are excited for this moment. We wanted to meet the leader of one of the largest democracies in the world.” Another said, “It’s an honour to see him in person. It is a proud moment for us.”
Strengthening Bonds with Nigeria
Before reaching Brazil, PM Modi visited Nigeria. There, he held productive talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They discussed boosting cooperation in defence, technology, health, and education.
India also pledged 20 tons of humanitarian aid to help Nigeria’s flood relief efforts. The two leaders agreed to collaborate on development goals for the Global South.
India’s Key Role in the G20 Summit
At the G20 Summit, India, as a Troika member, will have a significant role. It will build on the momentum from its successful G20 presidency last year. Brazil is continuing India’s focus on Global South priorities, ensuring progress on critical issues.
PM Modi highlighted India’s contributions in a statement. He said, “Last year, India’s successful Presidency elevated the G-20 to people’s G-20 and mainstreamed the priorities of the Global South into its Agenda. This year, Brazil has built upon India’s legacy. I look forward to meaningful discussions in keeping with our vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.'”
PM Modi will also use the summit to strengthen ties with other world leaders through bilateral discussions.
