The third edition of the India-Australia joint military exercise, AustraHind, is currently taking place at the Foreign Training Node in Aundh, Pune, Maharashtra, from November 8 to 21. According to a release from the Defence Ministry, this two-week training program is intended to bolster cooperation and interoperability between the armed forces of India and Australia.
“The 3rd edition of the India-Australia joint military exercise, AustraHind, is currently underway at the Foreign Training Node in Aundh, Pune. The exercise, which commenced on November 8, will continue until November 21, featuring a comprehensive two-week training program designed to enhance cooperation and interoperability between the armed forces of the two nations,” the release stated.

The initial phase of AustraHind 2024 has seen troops from both nations engaging in a range of activities, including physical fitness drills, martial arts, joint tactical planning, and training in special arms skills.
“Participants have also been practising combat scenarios such as raiding a hostile target and administering combat first aid to injured soldiers. These drills aim to improve coordination and build mutual understanding between the Indian and Australian forces,” the release noted.

In addition to training, the exercise has included social and cultural exchanges. Both contingents visited the historic Sinhagad Fort near Pune, offering a cultural and historical perspective. The Australian troops also toured the National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla on November 12.
“During the visit, the participants were familiarised with the NDA’s state-of-the-art training facilities and had the chance to interact with instructor staff, gaining insights into the academy’s rigorous training environment and its legacy of discipline and excellence in shaping future military leaders,” the release highlighted.
The second phase of AustraHind will emphasize joint combat drills and tactical exercises to further enhance operational readiness and coordination between the two forces. The exercise will conclude with a 48-hour validation exercise from November 19-20, testing the coordination and skills developed during the previous training sessions.
The AustraHind 2024 exercise underscores the deepening defence partnership between India and Australia, as both countries continue to work towards regional security and closer military collaboration, according to the release.
