Manipur: Two Bodies Found After Jiribam Encounter; Six People Missing

On Tuesday morning, two men were found dead in Manipur’s Jiribam district, a day after a violent encounter between militants and security forces. The bodies of Laishram Balen and Maibam Kesho were discovered in the Jakuradhor Karong area, where militants had set fire to several shops the previous day. The police are investigating the deaths, which are believed to be connected to the gunfight that resulted in the killing of 10 suspected militants on Monday.

In addition to the two deaths, the police reported that six people—three women and three children—have been missing since the gunbattle. IGP (Operations) I K Muivah confirmed that security forces are conducting search operations to locate the missing individuals.

The Jiribam district administration has imposed prohibitory orders in the area to prevent further unrest. A shutdown has been observed since 5 am on Tuesday in Kuki-Zo majority areas in the hills, protesting the deaths of suspected insurgents in the encounter. The militants involved in the gunfight were reportedly dressed in camouflage uniforms and armed with sophisticated weapons, according to the police. During the exchange of fire, the militants targeted a local police station and a nearby CRPF camp, injuring two CRPF personnel.

Tension Persists as Police Increase Presence

Despite the tense situation, the area remained calm but under tight security. Police personnel were seen patrolling vulnerable points in the district. The gunfight in Jiribam triggered fresh violence in Imphal Valley, with armed groups from opposing factions engaging in exchanges of fire. In response to the escalating situation, reinforcement teams, including Assam Rifles and CRPF personnel, have been deployed in disturbed areas.

Ethnic Strife Escalates

Manipur has been witnessing escalating ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, leading to significant casualties and widespread displacement. The ongoing conflict continues to challenge efforts for peace and stability in the region.
