Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav Holds Emergency Meeting On Elephant Deaths At Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Following the rising death toll among elephants at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve (BTR) in Madhya Pradesh’s Umaria district, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav held an emergency meeting in Bhopal on Friday.

According to the latest data, the death toll has now reached eight, with one elephant currently undergoing treatment, as reported by P.K. Verma, Deputy Director of BTR, on Wednesday evening.

During a routine patrol on Tuesday, four elephants from a herd of 13 were found dead, while four others appeared ill. Upon receiving this information, forest officials arrived at the site and confirmed the herd size of 13 elephants. Among them, two were found to be healthy, and treatment was initiated for the remaining sick elephants, Verma stated.

He added that during the course of treatment, three more elephants died on Tuesday night, followed by one additional death on Wednesday, raising the total number of fatalities to eight.

The Madhya Pradesh Forest Department posted on X, “Latest update on Bandhavgarh Elephant death incident. A total of eight elephants died, one is undergoing treatment, two are fully recovered by treatment and two are healthy and normal.”
