When the exit polls had predicted a Congress victory and early trends were showing the party achieving an absolute majority within hours, the situation was to change soon enough as the BJP edged ahead with over 50 seats. The stunning change left Hooda visibly agitated as he maintained a watch on the results flowing in from the Congress election office in Rohtak.

Undeterred by this blow, he came out confidently and declared to the media, “The Congress is going to form a government in the state. Only two or three rounds of counting have been completed. We see reports about how the Congress is getting a majority.”.

Hooda, who is contesting from the Rohtak’s Garhi Sampla-Kiloi constituency, has maintained a solid over-16,000 votes lead. When asked if his party would require support to form the government, he said Congress will definitely do so on its own merit and credited Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi, and other leaders for their efforts.

Even the initial elation at the Delhi AICC office seemed to have ebbed. Congress General Secretary for Communications, Jairam Ramesh, was assuaging reporters saying, “Need not be disheartened. It is a game of mind. We will not get deterred; need not be disheartened.
