Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has been granted bail by the Supreme Court after spending 17 months in jail. His emotional release from Tihar Jail was celebrated by party leaders and supporters, with Sisodia expressing gratitude to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the Constitution.

The Supreme Court based its decision on the principle that “bail is the rule, and jail is the exception,” emphasizing that bail should generally be granted unless there are compelling reasons to deny it, such as the risk of the accused fleeing or obstructing justice. The Court criticized lower courts for the prolonged detention without trial, asserting that such delays infringe upon personal liberty.

In cases involving the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), obtaining bail can be more challenging due to stricter conditions imposed by the 2018 amendment. However, the Supreme Court stressed the importance of timely trials, ruling that each case must be evaluated on its own merits.
