Delhi Police has announced strict prohibitory measures under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) from September 30 to October 5, 2024, in response to intelligence reports signaling potential unrest. The decision comes as the national capital faces a tense law-and-order situation due to several volatile issues. Among these are the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill, rising communal tensions surrounding the Shahi Idgah in Sadar Bazaar, ongoing political clashes around the MCD Standing Committee elections, and the pending results of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.
With legislative elections underway in Jammu, Kashmir, and Haryana, the authorities are also tightening border security around Delhi to monitor movements and prevent any infiltration attempts by anti-social elements. Additionally, the influx of VVIPs in New Delhi for Gandhi Jayanti celebrations on October 2 has necessitated heightened security.
The imposed restrictions include a ban on gatherings of five or more people, carrying weapons, and holding unauthorized protests or sit-ins. Violations will be punishable under Section 223 of the BNSS, a provision meant to safeguard public order.
