Turkey President UNGA Kashmir Speech Sparks Turkey-India Relations Shift

In a notable shift, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not mention Kashmir during his recent UNGA address, breaking a trend since 2019. This omission comes amid Turkey's efforts to strengthen ties with India, pursue BRICS membership, and address issues related to illegal Pakistani immigrants, signaling potential diplomatic changes.

A Shift in Focus Amidst Regional Tensions

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, known for addressing the Kashmir issue at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) since 2019, surprisingly omitted the topic in his 2024 address. Traditionally, Erdogan has called for peace and dialogue regarding Kashmir, especially following the revocation of Article 370 by India. This year’s speech shifted focus to conflicts in Syria and Gaza, criticizing Israel’s actions and advocating for Palestine.

Factors Influencing Erdogan’s Change in Tone

Several factors may explain Erdogan’s omission of Kashmir this year. First, Turkey’s desire to join the BRICS bloc, which includes India, may have influenced his approach. Additionally, Turkey seeks full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where India is a key member. Furthermore, Turkey has been expanding its ties with India-friendly nations and witnessing an increase in Indian tourism and businesses.

Growing Discontent with Pakistan and its Implications

Erdogan’s shift may also reflect Turkey’s disenchantment with Pakistan, particularly due to issues surrounding illegal Pakistani immigrants in Turkey. This rising friction has strained relations between the two countries. Erdogan’s previous remarks on Kashmir led to significant diplomatic consequences, including the cancellation of Modi’s visit to Turkey and a halt to defense deals between India and Turkey.
