In a significant development, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday to probe serious allegations regarding the adulteration of Tirupati Prasadam (laddus). This move comes in response to growing concerns about the quality and sanctity of the prasadam offered at the Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple in Tirupati.
Naidu declared, “We are forming a Special Investigation Team comprising officers of IGP level and above. The SIT will submit a report, and based on its findings, we will take appropriate action to ensure such incidents do not happen again.” The SIT is set to investigate whether animal fat or any other non-vegetarian substances were used in the preparation of the laddu prasadam.
Naidu further highlighted the need for maintaining tradition and purity in temple practices, saying, “I am taking three steps: purification according to traditions, an IGP-level inquiry, and ensuring that only believers are part of the management committee. Additionally, we will establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all temples to safeguard their sanctity.”
This announcement follows allegations made by Advocate K Karuna Sagar, who accused the previous YSRCP government of using animal fat in the prasadam. Sagar was reportedly shocked after lab tests indicated the presence of beef, pork, and fish oil in the ghee used for preparing the laddus, calling it a “conspiracy” and an attack on Hindu sentiments.
The controversy intensified with Congress leader Pawan Khera calling for a fast-track inquiry to restore faith in the prasadam’s purity. Khera criticized the executive officer of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) for contradicting the claims of adulteration and emphasized the need for swift justice to maintain the trust of devotees.
In response to opposition leader Jagan Mohan Reddy’s accusations of diversion tactics, Naidu dismissed the claims, stating that his government had not even been in office for 100 days. He urged Reddy to focus on policy critiques rather than stirring sentiments.
