Rahul Gandhi Speaks to Parents of EY Employee Over Video Call

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, spoke via video call on Saturday with the parents of Anna Sebastian Perayil, who tragically passed away allegedly due to extreme work pressure at Ernst & Young (EY). Gandhi assured the family that he would advocate for improved working conditions for professionals across India.

Family’s Courage Recognized

The call was facilitated by Praveen Chakravarty, Chairman of the All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC), who visited the family in Kochi. Gandhi expressed his condolences for Anna’s untimely death and commended her family’s bravery in speaking out during this difficult time, highlighting the importance of addressing workplace stress.

Following the conversation, Gandhi directed the AIPC to launch an awareness campaign in Anna’s memory. The AIPC plans to introduce a helpline to gather information from corporate professionals regarding work-related stress and toxic work environments. This initiative aims to develop draft guidelines for better working conditions in the corporate sector.

Legislative Action Proposed

In a related statement, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor shared his emotional conversation with Anna’s father, Sibi Joseph. Tharoor indicated plans to raise the need for legislation establishing a fixed work schedule, limiting hours to eight per day and five days a week. He emphasized the necessity of eradicating inhumane workplace conditions through stringent penalties for offenders.

Tragic Circumstances Surrounding Anna’s Death

Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old chartered accountant, reportedly died after enduring months of intense work pressure, including seven-day weeks and 14-hour days at EY. The firm expressed sorrow over her passing, stating that it has been in touch with the family and is committed to enhancing workplace conditions.

The Ministry of Labour & Employment is currently investigating claims of an “unsafe and exploitative work environment” following Anna’s death. This inquiry aims to address concerns regarding the treatment of employees within corporate settings, particularly in the aftermath of this tragic event.
