Indian-Origin Lawyer Got Fired Due To ‘Inappropriate Relationship’ With CEO

Nabanita Nag, Chief Legal Officer of Norfolk Southern Corporation, has been dismissed following an investigation into her consensual relationship with CEO Alan Shaw. Both Nag and Shaw were terminated for violating the company’s policies and code of ethics, despite their relationship being consensual. Shaw’s dismissal, according to the company, is unrelated to Norfolk Southern’s financial performance or operations.

The company’s press release highlighted that preliminary findings confirmed Shaw had breached company policies by engaging in a relationship with Nag, leading to their departures. Norfolk Southern clarified that the decision was based on ethical violations, not company performance.

In her LinkedIn profile, Nag described herself as a “seasoned leader,” having worked with three Fortune 300 companies, including a stint at Goldman Sachs. She joined Norfolk Southern in 2020 as General Counsel, before becoming Chief Legal Officer in 2022 and Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs in 2023.

Nag holds a bachelor’s degree in Government and English from Georgetown University and a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law.

Following Shaw’s exit, Mark R. George, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, has been appointed as the new President and CEO.
