Thousands rallied in Islamabad on Sunday, calling for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year on charges his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), deems politically motivated. This demonstration, organized by PTI, marked their first significant public show of force since the contentious national and regional elections held in February.

Obstacles and Clashes

Despite significant obstacles, including roadblocks and a heavy police presence, Khan’s supporters mobilized from across Pakistan. Images on social media showed protesters successfully removing shipping containers blocking major entry points into the city. PTI leaders and activists expressed their unwavering commitment to Khan, with Hammad Azhar declaring they would not rest until his release.

Tensions escalated as some attendees clashed with riot police, who used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Local media reported instances of stone-throwing by protesters, leading to injuries among police officers. The Islamabad administration had deployed riot police and set up roadblocks to prevent potential unrest.

Political and Legal Context

Imran Khan, ousted from office in April 2022, has been jailed since August 2023 on charges related to inciting violence on May 9, 2023, when his supporters attacked military facilities. His case has been further complicated by the arrest of a former spy chief, an ally from Khan’s tenure. Despite Khan’s denial of these allegations, his previous convictions have been overturned or suspended.

In July, the government announced plans to ban PTI, accusing the party of inciting violence and leaking classified information. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan criticized this move, calling it a blow to democratic norms. Additionally, a UN panel found Khan’s detention lacked legal grounds and appeared aimed at disqualifying him from future political office.
