Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh convened an emergency cabinet meeting on Saturday following a week of escalating violence in the state. The unrest intensified after at least five people were killed in a gunfight between two communities in the Jiribam district, with casualties expected to rise, according to security sources.
On Friday, suspected militants launched rocket attacks at the residence of Manipur’s first Chief Minister, Mairembam Koireng, killing one person and injuring six others. In response, security forces destroyed three bunkers in the Churachandpur district and conducted aerial patrols using military helicopters.
COCOMI Declares Indefinite Public Emergency
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has declared an indefinite public emergency due to what it described as increased aggression by Kuki militants. COCOMI spokesperson Khuraijam Athouba highlighted recent incidents of drone bombings in Imphal West, which killed several people and injured many others. Two missile attacks from militants hiding in the hills targeted the residence of former CM Mairembam Koireng, damaging his statue and property.
Residents Report Drone Sightings, Heightened Security
In Bishnupur and Imphal East districts, residents switched off their lights on Friday after multiple drone sightings were reported. Security forces are on high alert in these areas, monitoring the movement of large groups. Recent drone attacks in Imphal West have caused concern, marking the first use of drones as weapons in Manipur. On September 1, drones dropped bombs in Koutruk village, killing two and injuring nine. A subsequent attack in Senjam Chirang the next day left three people injured.
The situation in the state remains tense as security forces maintain heightened vigilance amid ongoing violence and the use of drones in attacks.
