The National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS has filed an intervention application with the Supreme Court, expressing the concerns of resident doctors across AIIMS institutions in India. The federation requested the court to intervene in an ongoing case that the Supreme Court had initiated on its own to address the safety of healthcare professionals.
Previously, in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 21, the Supreme Court set up a National Task Force (NTF) to provide recommendations on ensuring the safety and security of health workers nationwide.
Advocate Tanvi Dubey is representing the National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS in this case. The federation emphasised the need for immediate protective measures for doctors until the NTF’s recommendations are put into effect. Additionally, the organisation argued that healthcare workers, by virtue of their profession, deserve specific safety protections at their workplaces.
Other organisations, including the United Doctors Front Association and the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), have also approached the Supreme Court to be involved in the suo motu case.
