‘Shielding accused’: Rahul Gandhi Slams Bengal Govt Over Trainee Doctor’s Rape, Murder

Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with the sexual assault and murder of a female trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital. Gandhi condemned the alleged attempts to protect the accused rather than seeking justice for the victim, questioning the integrity of the hospital and the local administration.

In a post on X, Gandhi demanded strict punishment for those responsible for the heinous crime, which has shocked the entire nation. He expressed concern that the ongoing revelations about the inhumane act have created a sense of insecurity among the medical community and women at large. “The attempt to shield the accused instead of delivering justice to the victim raises serious concerns about the hospital and the local authorities,” he stated.

Gandhi also voiced the concerns of many parents, questioning how they can feel safe sending their daughters to study when such crimes occur even in medical colleges. He emphasized that despite the stringent laws introduced after the Nirbhaya case, such incidents continue to happen, indicating a failure in the system.

The Congress leader called for a serious societal discussion on the increasing violence against women, referencing cases from Hathras to Unnao, and Kathua to Kolkata. “I stand with the victim’s family in their unbearable pain. Justice must be served, and the perpetrators should face such severe punishment that it sets an example for society,” he added.

Earlier today, the West Bengal Police brought Sanjoy Roy, the prime suspect in the rape and murder of the post-graduate trainee doctor, to the Central Government Offices (CGO) Complex in Kolkata. Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case and dispatched a specialized medical and forensic team from Delhi.

According to CBI sources, a team of medical officers and forensic experts from Delhi has arrived at the crime scene in Kolkata, where the doctor was allegedly raped. The victim was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Her family has alleged that she was raped and murdered.
