Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: AIIMS Doctors’ Demand ‘Transparent Investigation’

Amid outrage over the sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor from Kolkata, West Bengal a massive protest was organised in AIIMS Delhi where more than 450 resident doctors and MBBS doctors participated. 

Shouting the slogans “Behan hum sharminda hai tere katil abhi zinda hai” and “ we want justice”, banners like “ Nirbhaya 2.0” and “we are living in republic not rape public” 

They marched from Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium to gate 3 crossing gate 1, against the heinous crime demanding:

1) Transparent Investigation: We insist on a proper and transparent investigation into the case, as recent incidents have cast doubt on the integrity of ongoing investigations and immediate transfer to CBI.

2) Resignation of Responsible Authorities: We demand the resignation of all authorities responsible for the failure to protect the dignity and life of the on-duty female doctor involved in this tragic incident including the Principal of RG Kar Medical College.

3) Adequate compensation to the bereaved family of our friend and colleague. 4) Implementation of the Central Protection Act (CPA): We demand the immediate implementation of the CPA or a similar law to ensure the protection of doctors across the country.

We urge the concerned authorities and Government to take swift measures and ensure the necessary action is taken else we would be forced to escalate our protest further.

On the 11th FORDA called for National wide protest with their six demands and as a result massive protest was organised across the nation in different medical college. 

What was the case: 

A semi-nude body of a second-year woman doctor was found in the chest medicine department by officials inside the seminar hall of the hospital on Friday. The post-graduate trainee (PGT) was on duty on Thursday night, while her body bore multiple injury marks like There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, injuries over the face and nail. The victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg… neck, right hand, ring finger, and… lips. 

The preliminary autopsy report says, she was sexually abuse before her murder was indicated by officials.  The father of the victim alleges that the woman doctor was raped and murdered inside the state-run hospital.

After an investigation, Kolkata Police arrested a suspect, who was later identified as Sanjay Roy.

An outsider, Roy worked as a civic volunteer on the police welfare board. He reportedly had easy access to multiple departments of the hospital.

As per reports, he was taken into custody by police after his activities were found to be suspicious.
