Union Minority Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha, seeking to amend the Waqf Act, 1995. The proposed bill aims to address issues related to the authority of State Waqf Boards and the Central Waqf Council, enhance the registration and survey of Waqf properties, and tackle encroachments.
During the parliamentary discussion, Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party criticized the bill, calling it a “well-thought-out political strategy.” He questioned the need for nominations when a democratic process is already in place and noted that other religious bodies do not involve non-community members.
Yadav also expressed concerns about historical precedents affecting future generations and accused the BJP of introducing the bill to placate its narrow-minded supporters. He further claimed that even the Speaker’s rights are being encroached upon and emphasized the need to protect democratic principles.
In response, Amit Shah rebutted Yadav’s comments, stating, “I disagree with the assertion that the chairman’s authority is exclusive to the opposition. The authority of the chairman belongs to the entire house, and such statements are unacceptable. You are not the sole protector of the chairman’s authority.”
