Bajrang Punia Extends His Support for Vinesh Phogat, Says “Those Who Are Trolling…”

Wrestler Bajrang Punia has strongly criticized those mocking Vinesh Phogat following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024. Phogat, who was disqualified for being over the 50kg weight limit by just 100 grams, has received widespread support from Punia, who has praised her efforts and resilience.

Punia addressed the situation, stating, “Those who are trolling have no idea about wrestling or how weight can be reduced. These are the people who are giving opinions now, they’re not upset because a medal has been lost.” He emphasized the strict regulations in wrestling tournaments, where there is a two-hour gap between weigh-in and the start of the match, and no allowance is given for weight discrepancies.

Punia also highlighted that Phogat’s situation is not unique, noting that several wrestlers have faced disqualification for similar reasons. “Vinesh tried her absolute best. This is not the first time this is happening. Several wrestlers, some of whom I know personally, have been disqualified due to this reason,” he said.

Punia expressed disappointment that instead of showing empathy, people were mocking Phogat. He added, “The unfortunate outcome of the incident is that people aren’t mourning the fact that a daughter of the nation has lost an Olympic medal. In fact, Vinesh is being mocked.”

Phogat has announced her retirement from wrestling, citing a lack of courage and strength to continue. Punia extended his support, tweeting, “Vinesh, you have not lost, you’ve been defeated. For us, you will always be a winner. You are not only a daughter of India but also its pride.”

Phogat has appealed her disqualification to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), requesting that a silver medal be awarded. The decision is still pending.
