MP: 1500 damru players set world record in Ujjain on third savan somvar

On the third Monday of the holy Savan month, Ujjain, known as Mahakal ki Nagri, achieved a new milestone. A total of 1,500 Damru players set a world record with a captivating rhythmic performance at Shaktipath, located on the premises of Mahakaleshwar Temple, Mahalok Lok. This event was officially recognized, as stated in an official release.

“The city resonated with the sound of Damru, Lord Shiva’s favored musical instrument. 1,500 people played Damru simultaneously, breaking the previous record set by the Federation of Indian Association in New York, where 488 people played Damru. Guinness World Records adjudicator Rishi Nath presented the certificate for creating the world record in Damru playing,” the release read.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav extended his greetings and congratulated Ujjain for this remarkable achievement. He took to his social media handle ‘X’ to express his joy. “With the sound of 1,500 Damrus, Avantika Nagari (Ujjain city) created a world record. A wish to make the city of Baba Mahakal resound with the sound of Damrus has come true today. On the third Monday of the holy month of Savan, Ujjain registered its name in the Guinness Book of World Records by playing Damrus to the tune of Bhasma Aarti. Now, it is very difficult to put this wonderful and supernatural feeling into words. May Baba Mahakal continue to bless all of us like this. Hearty congratulations to all the devotees of Baba Mahakal on this achievement,” CM Yadav wrote.

The event saw 1,500 Damru players from 25 groups playing Damru to the tune of Bhasma Aarti, creating a melodious and enchanting sound. The entire city reverberated with the sound of Damru. In a unique event on Shaktipath in front of Mahakal Mahalok, the captivating performance of Damru-playing artists dressed in saffron clothes enthralled everyone. The successful Damru playing program was organized with the efforts of the district administration and the Mahakal management committee.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has been instrumental in making the Baba Mahakal Sawari even more grand and divine. He has made unique efforts to enhance the grandeur of Mahakal Sawari. In the last two Baba Mahakal sawaris, tribal folk dances and performances by a 350-member police band were presented. Damru was played in the third Mahakal Sawari, taken out on the third Sawan Somvar.

Notably, there is a tradition of taking out Baba Mahakal’s sawari (procession) every Monday in the month of Savan. It is believed that Baba Mahakal goes on a tour of the city to know the condition of the public. Devotees eagerly wait for hours along the roadside to witness the procession and consider themselves blessed by getting a glimpse of Baba Mahakal.

This event not only marked a significant achievement for Ujjain but also highlighted the deep-rooted cultural and religious traditions associated with the month of Savan. The collective effort and dedication of the Damru players, along with the support from the district administration and the Mahakal management committee, made this event a grand success, resonating with spiritual and cultural significance for all participants and onlookers.
