2024 US Election: Walz, Shapiro or Kelly? Who Will Emerge as Kamala Harris’ Running Mate?

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to interview three top candidates for her running mate at her Washington, DC, home on Sunday. The contenders are Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, US Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Harris is expected to announce her choice by Monday, with a social media reveal planned for Tuesday in Philadelphia. This decision is crucial for Harris as she prepares to run against Donald Trump in the November 5 election following President Biden’s withdrawal.

Here’s a detailed look at the vice-presidential candidates:

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz

Tim Walz, 60, has recently emerged as a significant contender for the vice-presidential nomination. A former high school teacher and National Guard member, Walz has gained visibility through his support for Harris and appearances on major news channels. One notable moment was his appearance at a St. Paul event in a grey T-shirt and camouflage hat, which went viral.

Despite not confirming if he has received vetting materials from Harris’s team, Walz has expressed gratitude for the consideration. His rise as a candidate has surprised some due to his previous low profile. Political analyst David Schultz notes that while Walz has strong support among progressives and youth, his age might be a concern, given that he is close in age to Harris and recent debates have centred on the age of presidential candidates.

US Senator Mark Kelly

Mark Kelly, a US Senator from Arizona, is a strong contender for the vice-presidential slot. His background as a Navy pilot and astronaut, combined with his advocacy for gun control alongside his wife Gabrielle Giffords, makes him a notable candidate. Kelly first won his Senate seat in a special election against Republican Martha McSally and was re-elected in 2024. His centrist approach is seen as beneficial in swing states like Arizona.

However, Kelly faces criticism from some progressives due to his centrist stance and views on labor issues. His opposition to union-friendly legislation has led to some discontent among labor groups, which could impact his appeal within the Democratic Party.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro

Josh Shapiro, 51, is a prominent candidate due to his strong performance and high approval ratings. Having held roles as a state representative, Montgomery County Board Chair, Attorney General, and now Governor, Shapiro’s track record is impressive. His victory in the gubernatorial race against a Trump-backed Republican and his high approval ratings in Pennsylvania enhance his candidacy, especially in this key state.

Despite his successes, Shapiro faces criticism from progressives regarding his decisions on issues like school choice and environmental policies. His support for Israel and handling of college protests related to Gaza have also faced scrutiny. Additionally, his support for private school vouchers and his handling of a sexual harassment complaint have drawn criticism.

The selected candidate will be informed of the decision on Monday night or Tuesday morning, and Harris’s team, led by former Attorney General Eric Holder, has reviewed each candidate’s background. Harris also met with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as part of the selection process.
