Tourist vehicles entering Sikkim will now be required to carry large garbage bags, according to a new official order issued by the Tourism Department. This mandate is aimed at ensuring proper waste disposal by tourists visiting the state. The responsibility of informing tourists about the necessity of using these garbage bags falls on tour operators, travel agencies, and vehicle drivers.
The decision to enforce this rule is part of a broader effort to promote environmental sustainability through community participation. The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department stressed that random checks will be conducted to ensure adherence to the order, and vehicles found in violation will face penalties. Awareness campaigns are also being launched to educate tourists about waste management and the importance of maintaining cleanliness.
Sikkim, known for its picturesque Himalayan destinations, attracts over 20 lakh visitors each year despite being India’s least populated state with over 6 lakh residents. The new regulation is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to balance tourism growth with environmental conservation.
