Gautam Gambhir May Select Forgotten Pacer For Surprise Call-up, Says Mentor

Gautam Gambhir has been chosen as the head coach of the Indian cricket team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Following India’s recent win in the T20 World Cup in Barbados, Gambhir, known for his determination and strategic skills as a former opener, takes over from Rahul Dravid. His appointment has received praise, especially from his childhood coach, Sanjay Bharadwaj, who believes Gambhir’s exceptional qualities will take the team to new heights.

Bharadwaj, who has mentored several Indian cricketers including Amit Mishra, Unmukt Chand, and Nitish Rana, expressed confidence in Gambhir’s ability to motivate players. He said, “Gautam knows how to bring out the best in his players. This is what great coaches do. He understands his players well and can help them perform at their peak.”

Gambhir’s impressive career as a player, highlighted by key roles in India’s successful T20 World Cup in 2007 and ODI World Cup in 2011, shows his leadership and deep cricketing knowledge. Bharadwaj emphasized Gambhir’s confidence in his decisions and commitment to winning, noting, “He always played to win from a young age. Losing was never an option for him.”

The coach highlighted Gambhir’s ability to spot talent early, mentioning his support for future stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Bharadwaj said, “Years ago, he gave Virat+ the ‘Man of the Match’ award, showing his generosity. He also saw greatness in Rohit Sharma when he needed encouragement.”

Throughout his career, Gambhir has been known for his instinctive decision-making and talent development, supporting players like Kuldeep Yadav and Navdeep Saini early in their careers. “He consistently picked players like Kuldeep Yadav and Navdeep Saini for the Indian team. His decision to back West Indian all-rounder Sunil Narine during IPL 2024 also showed his sharp cricketing mind,” Bharadwaj added, highlighting Gambhir’s skills.

With Gambhir now in charge, expectations are high for India to win their first ODI World Cup title in 13 years. Bharadwaj’s advice to his former student emphasizes the importance of honesty in leadership. He said, “Through his batting, he helped India win two World Cups in 2007 and 2011. As a player, he contributed to these successes and later led KKR to three IPL titles. He has a history of facing challenges head-on; his honesty and dedication will be crucial.”

As Gautam Gambhir begins this new role, the cricketing world eagerly awaits his impact. From a determined young cricketer to a celebrated World Cup champion and now the head coach of the Indian national team, Gambhir’s journey reflects his pursuit of excellence and passion for the game.
