New Delhi: Elephants at Vadakkumnatha Kshethram were treated to a royal feast on Tuesday, as they swapped their usual bananas for Tripura’s famed GI-tagged Queen Pineapples.
This initiative, led by Minister of State for Petroleum and Tourism, Suresh Gopi, has created a buzz across the state.
Vadakkumnathan Kshethram, or Vadakkumnathan Temple, is a renowned Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in the city of Thrissur, Kerala and is one of the oldest and most important Shiva temples in South India and is famous for its historical and cultural significance.
It is a prominent site for the annual Thrissur Pooram festival, one of the largest and most famous temple festivals in Kerala, which attracts thousands of devotees and tourists from around the world.
The temple is situated on an elevated hillock and is surrounded by a massive stone wall with four gopurams (monumental towers) facing four cardinal directions. The inner sanctum houses the idol of Lord Shiva, while the temple complex also includes shrines dedicated to other deities such as Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati
Gopi, who is also a prominent movie star from South India, is known for his dedication to Kerala’s heritage. He organised this special treat for the elephants which are revered across the country.
Tripura contributes a significant 8.5% to India’s total pineapple crop. The introduction of these pineapples to the elephants’ diet is seen as a gesture of respect and affection towards these majestic animals. “This is more than just a treat. Sharing Tripura’s finest Queen Pineapples with these revered Elephants is a gesture of love and respect, strengthening the bond between our states,” Gopi said.
The success of this initiative is being attributed to the collaborative efforts of several key figures. Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha and Minister Susanta Choudhary played crucial roles in facilitating this sweet exchange which also saw the contribution of J. K. Sinha, Chief Secretary of Tripura, Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and MLA Deepak Majumder, which ensured that the pineapples arrived in Kerala fresh and on time.
The elephants of Vadakkumnatha Kshethram hold a significant place in Kerala’s grand festivities and cultural heritage. Officials said that by incorporating Tripura’s Queen Pineapples into their diet, this initiative not only honours the elephants but also promotes the exceptional quality and unique flavor of these pineapples. This initiative promises substantial economic benefits for Tripura’s farmers.
Gopi told reporters that the Modi government supports every section of society and such initiatives while praising the Tripura government for their efforts in aiding local farmers. “This initiative is a delightful reminder of the power of unity and sharing cultural treasures,” he said.
