Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday to review the flood situation in the state. Shah also contacted the Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat to inquire about the rising water levels in their states. He assured all three CMs of Central assistance and support from the National Disaster Response Force to manage the crisis.
Shah’s separate phone calls to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat aimed to assess the flood conditions and water level surges caused by heavy rainfall. His proactive approach comes as the floods in Assam continue to affect thousands.
In Assam, the flood situation remains severe, with the death toll exceeding 90, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). More than 5 lakh people across 18 districts are affected, with Cachar being the worst-hit district. Other affected districts include Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Sivasagar.
In Assam, 1,342 villages in 52 revenue circles are underwater, submerging 25,367.61 hectares of crop area. The Brahmaputra River is above the danger mark at Neamatighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri, while the Burhidihing River is above the danger mark at Chenimari (Khowang) and the Disang River at Nanglamuraghat. Over 58,000 people are sheltering in 172 relief camps and distribution centers across 13 districts, and 283,712 domestic animals are affected by the floods.
In Uttar Pradesh, particularly in the eastern and central regions, the rising water levels of several rivers have impacted around 18 lakh people in over 900 villages. Nearly 18 districts, including Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Kushinagar, Shravasti, Balrampur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Barabanki, Sitapur, Gonda, Siddharth Nagar, Moradabad, Bareilly, and Basti are affected. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas and directed officials to provide all possible assistance to those impacted.
In Gujarat, heavy rain in Valsad district has caused flooding in low-lying areas and on the national highway. Disaster cell teams have been deployed to drain the water. The heavy rains have also raised the water level in Madhuban Dam.
