Delhi Police Start Performing Their Duties Under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita

Following the first implementation of new criminal laws, a policeman in northeast Delhi for the first time, responded to shooting call of 12.50am on July 1.

Despite receiving training and taking dummy exercise to get familiar with this change, the cop felt pressured to perform his duty properly.

After the call, the police officer wrote a short description in his daily Diary Entry in the police app E-Praman.

Later, he visited the location and recorded the video via the app and then, he provided short description in one of the columns.

Subsequently, he deposited the centralized video pool at police headquarters. After uploading the video, the police officer records seizure memo and uploads it. After completing the final process, a certificate under Section 63(4) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was received.

This entire procedure concluded, all within few hours. Talking about his new set of laws with TOI, the police officer said, ‘There was a mix of excitement and a little nervousness…At the crime spot, the first thing I did was record or photograph the scene. This was the first time I was doing so. Every single frame t required for investigation was recorded and then uploaded on the app, all in real time’.

Didn’t Have To Use Pen & Paper

It was for the first time, that police officer didn’t utilize pen & paper at crime scene.

‘My mobile phone was my main tool, and every single thing was videographed in sequence…I won’t need to sift through a thick bunch of papers to check any point during investigation. Everything is stored in the app, which cannot be tampered with or misplaced.’

But he also revealed, that in case, there was not internet connection, the officers were given the window of 48 hours to upload the details, after entering internet areas.

Moreover, he also added, with the help of FIR number, I can retrieve all the details of the case. Now accused cannot even claim that the evidence was planted or manipulated.

Talking about his first day with the law, another officer was in all praise for BNS, saying, that procedures under this law weren’t hectic. Within few minutes, all necessary details can be uploaded for senior officers to review, significantly reducing the time previously spent on paperwork.
