On the day Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla condemned the 1975 Emergency, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, criticized the government, alleging a concerted effort to keep her husband in jail, likening it to “dictatorship” and “Emergency.”
“Arvind Kejriwal was granted bail on June 20. Immediately, the ED obtained a stay. The very next day, the CBI named him an accused. And today, he was arrested. The entire system is ensuring he remains in jail. This isn’t law; this is dictatorship, this is an emergency,” Sunita Kejriwal posted on ‘X’.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday from the courtroom in connection with the Excise policy case. The arrest followed permission from the Vacation Judge of the Delhi Court to question him in court and formally arrest him. The court instructed the CBI to present the evidence justifying the arrest.
Kejriwal appeared before the court of Vacation Judge Amitabh Rawat as per the production warrant issued the previous day.
Meanwhile, NDA leaders protested in the Parliament premises on Wednesday marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, demanding an apology from the Congress.
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla condemned the Emergency, and the house observed a two-minute silence for those who lost their lives during that period.
“This House strongly condemns the decision to impose the Emergency in 1975. Alongside, we salute the determination of all those who opposed it, fought against it, and fulfilled their duty to safeguard India’s democracy. June 25, 1975, will forever be remembered as a dark chapter in India’s history,” Birla stated.
“On this day, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency and attacked the Constitution drafted by Baba Saheb Ambedkar. India is revered globally as the mother of democracy. Our democratic ethos and debates have always thrived. Indira Gandhi imposed dictatorship on such a nation. India’s democratic values were crushed, and freedom of expression was stifled,” he added.
