Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, condemned the terrorist attacks in Dagestan, a Muslim-majority region in Russia. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement against terrorism, extremism, and attacks on civilians. The Kingdom extended condolences to the victims’ families and the Russian people, wishing the injured a quick recovery.
The attacks on Sunday targeted churches and synagogues, killing 21 people and injuring at least 46. It occurred in Derbent and Makhachkala, targeting two Orthodox churches, a synagogue, and a police checkpoint. Social media and Russian TV showed footage of smoke and flames at the synagogue in Derbent, a city known for its historic Jewish community. Similar incidents happened in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, where a police post was also attacked.
The attacks are suspected to be carried out by an “international terrorist organization,” though the attackers’ identities remain unknown. The Russian news agency TASS suggested this possibility as local authorities strive to stabilize the situation and identify those responsible.
The synagogue attack in Derbent occurred just before evening prayers, causing significant damage but no casualties. In Makhachkala, 19 people sought refuge in an Orthodox church during the assault and were safely evacuated by police.
