Digvijay’s defeat a blessing in disguise for Congress

The political equation of congress doesn’t seem to be balanced with its current state of affairs. There is a different situation if we talk about the results of the lok sabha elections. After two Congress members winning the Lok Sabha elections, the number of Congress members in Rajya Sabha has come down to 25. Congress got the Leader of Opposition post this time by winning 99 seats in Lok Sabha, but alarm bells have rung in Rajya Sabha. The number of Congress members has reached such a boundary that if one more seat is reduced, the Leader of Opposition post will be snatched away.
Had Digvijay Singh won the Lok Sabha elections, it was certain that the Congress would lose the Leader of Opposition post in the Rajya Sabha. A minimum of 25 members is required for this position in the Rajya Sabha. Following the election of Deepender Hooda and KC Venugopal to the Lok Sabha, the number of Congress members in the Rajya Sabha dropped from 27 to 25. With ten Rajya Sabha seats becoming vacant and all expected to be won by the NDA, the NDA’s total would rise from 110 to 120.
Ten members of the Rajya Sabha have won the Lok Sabha elections, including Congress’s KC Venugopal and Deepender Hooda. Digvijay Singh lost the Lok Sabha election and will therefore remain in the Rajya Sabha. Had Digvijay Singh won, it would have been certain that Mallikarjun Kharge would lose the Leader of Opposition post. Congress had 29 seats in March, but this number was reduced to 27 due to the loss of one seat each from Jharkhand and Kerala. Among the ten seats that have become vacant, one each is from Rajasthan and Haryana.
Previously, these seats were held by the Congress, but now the BJP is set to gain them. Deepender Hooda represented Haryana, and KC Venugopal represented Rajasthan. The remaining seats include Jyotiraditya Scindia from Madhya Pradesh, Kamakhya Prasad from Assam, Misa Bharti and Vivek Thakur from Bihar, Udayanraje Bhosale and Piyush Goyal from Maharashtra, Biplab Kumar from Tripura, and Sarbananda Sonowal from Assam. All these seats will go to the NDA.
The crisis for Congress is that it will not secure any seats from any state in the interim. The position of its leader in the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for 2026 is at risk. By then, many of its seats will be vacant in various states, with limited opportunities for a comeback. However, if Congress wins the upcoming assembly elections in states like Haryana, Maharashtra, Delhi, Bihar, and Kerala, the situation could change.
