What’s On Modi 3.0 Diplomatic Agenda? A Look Ahead At Key Global Events

As Narendra Modi commenced his third consecutive term as Prime Minister of India, a series of significant global events loom, where India’s participation will wield substantial influence on geopolitics.

Over the past decade, India has emerged as a prominent voice on the global stage. Under PM Modi’s leadership, India has sought to position itself as the “Voice of the Global South” through a proactive diplomatic approach. Notably, India hosted the G20 Summit with the theme “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” during its presidency.

Here are the key upcoming global events following Modi’s third term inauguration:

  1. BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting:

India’s foreign policy engagements kick off with the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting scheduled for June 10-11 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with additional members joining last year.

2. G7 Summit 2024:

India’s involvement continues with the Group of Seven (G7) Summit 2024 in Italy from June 13 to 15. Prime Minister Modi is slated to participate in this forum, which includes Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the USA.

3. Swiss Peace Summit:

Another significant event, the global peace summit in Switzerland on June 15-16, aims to address the Russia-Ukraine conflict. India’s participation remains uncertain, although invitations have been extended.

4. US NSA Jake Sullivan’s India Visit:

United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is set to visit India to engage with the new government on shared priorities, including strategic technology partnerships.

5. SCO Summit in Kazakhstan:

Later this year, India will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit under the presidency of Kazakhstan, focusing on regional security and development initiatives.

Modi’s third term inauguration, marked by an impressive ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, underscores India’s growing stature on the global stage. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA secured a significant majority in the recent Lok Sabha elections, reaffirming Modi’s leadership. Several leaders from neighboring regions and the Indian Ocean region attended the ceremony, highlighting India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
