Basirhat (Sandeshkhali) Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Sandeshkhali’s Turning Point In West Bengal?

Live updates on the Basirhat (Sandeshkhali) Election Results 2024: Rekha Patra, known for leading protests in Sandeshkhali against Shahjahan Sheikh, has been chosen by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as their candidate for the Basirhat constituency.

In this contest, she is up against Haji Nurul Islam from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Nirapada Sarkar from the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

The Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, particularly Sandeshkhali, which was at the center of the clash between the ruling Trinamool Congress and BJP in Bengal, will be crucial to monitor on June 4.

Basirhat has gained notable attention due to reports of alleged wrongdoing and land grabbing involving Shahjahan Sheikh of the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Sandeshkhali. The Basirhat Lok Sabha seat underwent voting in the seventh phase on June 1.

Key candidates

Rekha Patra, a key figure in Sandeshkhali’s protests against Shahjahan Sheikh, has been nominated by the BJP to contest in the Basirhat constituency. She faces competition from Haji Nurul Islam of the TMC and Nirapada Sarkar of the CPI(M). Patra’s efforts led to Sheikh’s expulsion from the TMC and arrest due to allegations of misconduct against women in Sandeshkhali.

The Sandeshkhali incident has grown into a major concern for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding accusations of enabling ‘mafia raj’ in West Bengal.

Allegations of land grabbing and the exploitation of women have become a focal point in the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and TMC, particularly as elections approach. What initially seemed like a local problem has now become a symbol of the governance issues confronting West Bengal on a larger scale.
