15 Fatalities In 24 Hours As Temperature Rises In Eastern India

15 individuals have tragically lost their lives to suspected heatstroke in the eastern states of Bihar and Odisha, where a relentless heatwave shows no signs of relenting until Saturday. In the capital city of Delhi, temperatures soared to unprecedented levels, with a recorded high of 52.9 degrees Celsius this week, pending confirmation as weather station sensors undergo scrutiny. While there may be a slight reprieve in temperatures expected in north-western and central India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the enduring heatwave will persist in the eastern region for at least another two days.

The gravity of the situation is reflected in the reports of 10 deaths in Odisha’s Rourkela region and 5 in Bihar’s Aurangabad, with additional fatalities occurring being taken to medical facilities. Measures have been implemented in Odisha to curb outdoor activities during peak heat hours, emphasizing the severity of the conditions. Nearby in Jharkhand, three suspected heatstroke-related deaths have been reported, further underscoring the crisis.

Delhi’s wildlife is also feeling the heat, with reports of birds and wild monkeys succumbing to the scorching temperatures, prompting the city zoo to take measures to provide relief to its inhabitants. Additionally, Delhi recorded its first heat-related fatality this week amidst an acute water shortage exacerbating the situation.

Amidst the heat-related challenges, northeastern states are grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, with heavy rainfall leading to flooding in parts. However, in a glimmer of hope, Kerala welcomed early monsoon rains, offering relief from the scorching temperatures. As India confronts these dual challenges of extreme weather events and climate change, urgent global action is needed to mitigate their impacts and safeguard vulnerable populations.
