After Cyclone Remal: Assam Hit by Heavy Rain, Strong Winds

Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Assam following the landfall on Sunday night of Cyclone Remal.

Flood-like situations have emerged in the Kampur area of the state’s Nagaon district as excess water from the swollen Borpani River submerged several villages in the area.

As a consequence of Cyclone Remal’s impact, authorities initiated the release of water from two hydroelectric power projects due to continuous rainfall. The overflowing Borpani River led to the partial collapse of a wooden bridge in the Kampur area, and water inundated numerous homes.

Local officials reported that persistent heavy rainfall resulted in water seepage into residences and road blockages in the Kampur Revenue Circle vicinity. Consequently, residents were compelled to evacuate to safer locations.

Similar devastation was observed in the Dima Hasao district of the state.

Earlier reports indicated casualties and injuries following the heavy rain and strong winds on Tuesday. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person sustained injuries in the Palasbari area of Kamrup district. Damage to several houses was reported in Palashbari, Chaygaon, and Boko Revenue Circle areas. Additionally, numerous trees were uprooted, and infrastructure belonging to the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) suffered damage across various locations in the Nagaon district.
