As Cyclone “Remal” intensifies over the Bay of Bengal, posing a severe threat, Tripura is swiftly implementing preparatory measures to mitigate potential damages. The cyclone, expected to bring sustained winds of 110-120 kmph with gusts reaching 135 kmph, is projected to make landfall near Khepupara and Sagar Island around 11 pm on Sunday.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have issued advisories, warning of increased rainfall and strong winds in Tripura from May 26 to May 29. Anticipating the cyclone’s impact, the Revenue Department of Tripura has instructed District Magistrates and Collectors to initiate necessary preparations.
In response, the State Executive Committee (SEC), chaired by the Chief Secretary, convened an urgent meeting on Sunday, attended by key officials and representatives from relevant agencies. Important decisions were made, including the closure of schools, educational institutions, and Anganwadi centers on May 27 and May 28. The SEC also requested deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and ensured availability of food and essential supplies.
The Transport Department is coordinating with transportation authorities to ensure public safety, while the Airport Authority of India, Agartala, announced cancellations of flights arriving from Kolkata until 9 am on May 27. However, flights from Delhi, Bangalore, and Guwahati are operating as scheduled.
Red alerts have been issued for West Tripura, Khowai, South Tripura, and Dhalai districts, with North Tripura and Unakoti districts placed under orange alert. The districts are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Despite the impending cyclone, Tripura assures citizens that adequate measures are in place to handle the situation effectively. Officials urge residents to stay informed through official channels and follow safety guidelines to minimize risks posed by Cyclone “Remal.”
