Days following flooding in April, the United Arab Emirates has experienced heavy rains again, resulting in numerous flight cancellations and delays in and out of Dubai, while residents and students were advised to work and study from home, as per Khaleej Times.
An orange alert was issued due to heavy rains and thunderstorms across the UAE. The country has been bracing for this spell of unstable weather, expected to peak from May 2 to May 3.
Precautionary measures have been advised across various sectors. Schools have shifted to distance learning, and companies have been urged to facilitate remote work. Parks and beaches have been closed.
In response to the weather conditions, the Dubai government announced work-from-home arrangements for government employees on May 2 and May 3.
The UAE’s disaster management authority reaffirmed the nation’s readiness to handle the upcoming weather conditions, stating that all relevant agencies are prepared to implement necessary measures.
Although the impending weather is not expected to be as severe as the rainfall experienced on April 16, officials have discussed precautionary measures to be taken.
Government schools in the UAE will conduct online classes on May 2 and 3. Additionally, all private schools in Dubai, including nurseries and universities, will switch to online learning during these days, according to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).
Dubai Airport reported five inbound flights diverted and cancellations of nine arrivals and four outbound flights on May 2. Passengers are advised to allocate extra travel time due to potential road congestion.
Emirates and Flydubai have cancelled several flights due to adverse weather conditions, leading to reduced flight operations at Dubai International Airport. Passengers are advised to expect delays and plan accordingly.
Sharjah-based Air Arabia and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways have also issued advisories for passengers to plan for additional travel time to the airport.
Indian airlines IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet have reported flight disruptions due to bad weather across various UAE airports. IndiGo advised passengers to allow extra time for airport travel and check for updates on their flights.
