Synchronicity: Crazy coincidence or something more curious?

We have all experienced a moment of synchronicity. We are thinking of someone and then out of the blue, they suddenly call or we randomly bump into someone we know on the other side of the world. When such moments happen, it can feel like magic, as if our internal world is somehow being reflected back to us, like getting a second opinion or confirmation on something from the universe.

In psychology, synchronicity is defined as the occurrence of meaningful coincidences that seem to have no cause. The word itself was coined in the late 1950s by psychologist Carl Jung, and derives from the Greek, meaning, syn-, “together,” and khronos, “time”, or in other words being in the right place at the right time. Author Melissa Tipton writes, “when you remain connected to the Divine, she will speak to you – in patterns and connections, signs and synchronicities and all sorts of gifts”.

This is something really worth exploring, especially when we begin to follow our spiritual path. It is as though there is a divine presence that guides us towards our destiny and the hand of fate whispers in our ear and the right book, the right leaflet, the right person, suddenly (and it always feels like suddenly) appears in our life. There is a purpose to life for each one of us, we just need to keep looking out for the signs and signals that will point the way, be attentive to those magical moments; an idea in the mind, a feeling in the heart, because there will be a significance.

We all have a unique relationship with a realm of consciousness where the Divine operates, and our higher self operates. We can tap into that consciousness and work with it in such a way that our practical life can be supported by that which exists beyond the physical plane. Nothing happens in this world that is without purpose and meaning. I have the potential for realising the truth of who I am, and that my life is anything but random. The universal law of karma, action, means that every action is like a ball being thrown against a wall – the ball will come back with an equal strength and at the same angle, not necessarily immediately, but it will return. This means that whatever I do now will determine my future; so how lovely will my future be if I tap into the wisdom of aligning myself to the highest energy. In meditation, we become more still, and receptive to that dialogue, as I, the soul, link up with the Divine Soul.

Everything is energy and there is a principle of order amidst the seeming chaos. Our own lives have a harmony and beauty that is unfolding if we take the time to stand back and see. We are living in a beautifully orchestrated symphony. The more we are able to align in this way, the more we can be in the right place at the right time and flow with the synchronicity of life. There are 10 ways we can bring more magic of synchronicity into our lives:

Be mindful and aware. Practise alertness, pay attention to the present moment.
Be open and receptive. Try not to rationalise or limit any thinking.
Be humble. Put the ego to one side. Hold desires loosely to allow life to flow through you with acceptance.
Be trusting. Trust your intuition and the paths that open up in front of you.
Follow your instincts – listen to the still small voice in the quiet moments.
Practise meditation or a life of prayer. The higher our frequency, the more synchronicity will happen.
Tune into your body. The body holds a huge amount of wisdom. The body is constantly ‘eavesdropping’ on the mind and will always tell us what is going on.
Listen to your dreams. Things you cannot normally access come through from a deeper level in your dreams.
Be fully aware of the moment between sleeping and wakening, as there are very often messages that come through at that time.
Ask! Don’t ask for less of what you don’t want, but be very specific and clear about what you do want. See how that energy is reflected back to you.
Remember, the Divine is always listening. I am a beautiful, unique soul with my own connection with the Divine, an amazing energy that does not have hands, but will work through me. The Divine does not want us to think or act ‘small’. Think big and be the incredible you that you are.
