Under the guidance of Harjot Singh Bains, District Language Officer, Language Department, Punjab, the Minister of Higher Education and Languages, District Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, organized a function dedicated to the 76th anniversary of the Language Department, Punjab, on January 1, 2024, in the office premises. SK Aggarwal (Chairman, District Consumer Commission, Mohali, and Rupnagar) served as the chief guest, and Prof. Jalore Singh Khiva (Former Principal, Government Brijindra College, Faridkot) participated.

The function commenced with the departmental song ‘Dhanu Lekhri Nanaka’ of the Department of Languages, Punjab. District Language Officer Dr. Davinder Singh Boha, while addressing the Board of Directors, writers, and dignitaries, extended a warm welcome to the mother tongue Punjabi. Providing insight into the history and achievements of the Department of Languages, Punjab, he mentioned that it was established on January 1, 1948, as the ‘Punjabi Section’ and has been known as the ‘Department of Languages, Punjab’ since 1956. The department has now completed 76 years from 1948 to 2024. Dr. Boha highlighted the Punjab Government’s commendable initiative to prioritize Punjabi language on all state boards to promote the mother tongue.

Chief guest S. Aggarwal expressed pride in starting the new year with a literary celebration as the Office of the District Language Officer, Mohali, commemorated the 76th Foundation Day of the Language Department Punjab. He emphasized the therapeutic value of literature for humans and credited his success to his mother tongue Punjabi. Additionally, he noted that the mother tongue sometimes aids individuals in legal proceedings.

The main speaker, Prof. Jalore Singh Khiva, congratulated the Language Department, Punjab, on its Foundation Day and praised the unique initiatives of the District Language Officer’s office in Mohali. Distinguishing between speech and language, he explained that speech involves ‘talk in the mouth,’ while language follows the principle of ‘first weigh and then speak.’ Prof. Khiva highlighted Punjabi as a world-class language that has incorporated words from many languages, glorifying the language with profound meanings behind each word
