Punjab government has introduced a compensation policy for its employees in the electricity sector, covering regular, contract-based, and sub-contract-based workers. The policy, effective from December 8, 2023, aims to provide financial assistance to employees involved in work-related incidents. Power Minister Harjot Singh ETO highlighted that regular employees of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) will not only receive compensation for accidents but can also avail emergency medical advances up to Rs 3 lakh. The policy emphasizes the importance of addressing changing demands and circumstances for employee welfare. Minister ETO stressed the critical role PSPCL staff plays in ensuring uninterrupted power supply and lauded the extensive policy, designed to apply compensation for accidents correctly. Under this new policy, compensation for ex-gratia assistance in case of fatal accidents has been increased from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh for contractual workers. Additionally, financial aid for such workers is enhanced through a group insurance amount, raised from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Minister ETO stated that before the initiation of this policy, contract-based and sub-contract-based workers in various categories did not receive non-fatal accident compensation. However, the new policy ensures that in the case of 100% disability, a compensation amount of Rs10 lakh will be provided. Furthermore, compensation for disabilities among differently-abled individuals will be determined based on severity. The Minister highlighted that the policy brings a significant increase in compensation for non-major individuals, previously under limited benefits. He affirmed that this comprehensive accident compensation policy, encouraging employee-centric policies, will serve as a model for other states, prioritizing the security of those contributing to essential services.
