The ongoing development projects in various areas of Chandigarh have become a nightmare for commuters due to inadequate traffic management, resulting in significant traffic jams and inconvenience for residents. The Chandigarh municipal corporation initiated a project in Sector 44 to install larger sewage pipes, intending to alleviate issues with clogged sewer lines in the southern sectors. However, the execution of the project has led to severe traffic mismanagement in the vicinity.
The absence of traffic police exacerbates the situation, as witnessed by massive traffic jams on Thursday, particularly on the crucial Sector 44/45 dividing road connecting directly to Mohali. During peak traffic hours, congestion was exacerbated by the already crowded Burial area in Sector 45. This prompted both two-wheelers and four-wheelers to navigate non-designated areas, causing problems for commercial and residential zones along the road, according to complaints from residents like Umesh Kumar.Similar challenges unfolded on a road from PGIMER to New Chandigarh via Madhya Marg, where underground work contributed to extensive traffic jams, compounded by encroachments. Despite the municipal corporation’s prior communication to the Chandigarh traffic police about the ongoing projects and a formal letter requesting traffic management, the ground reality reveals a stark contrast. While a few traffic cops were observed in the Khuda Lahora stretch, the crucial Sector 44/45 dividing road lacked police presence during peak hours, aggravating the traffic woes.
