The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted another storm, even as Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are yet to recover from the aftermath of cyclone Nivar. According to the prediction, the storm is brewing in the Bay of Bengal region and is likely to bring heavy rain to Chennai, Puducherry and Karaikal on 2-3 December.
In its latest communication, IMD said, “A low pressure area is very likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 36 hours. It would concentrate into a depression during the subsequent 24 hours and is very likely to intensify further and very likely to move westwards and reach Puducherry-Tamil Nadu coast on 2nd December.”
Meanwhile, cyclone Nivar caused heavy rain in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry when it made landfall on November 26, leaving three dead and displacing 2,27,000 people in Tamil Nadu. Though normalcy in the urban areas of Chennai has returned, waterlogged areas on the outskirts, like West Tambaram and Mudichur, are still seeing receding water.
Speaking to the media, Electricity Minister Thangamani said that power supply has been completely restored in Cuddalore and Villurpuram districts and 100% power supply will be restored in Chennai by Friday night.
The Commissioner of Revenue Administration said that additional corporation workers have been sent to the areas where water is still stagnant and powerful motors are being deployed to pump it out. However, the Tamil Nadu government is still assessing the complete damage caused by Nivar, although officials say that the damage is much less than what had been expected by the government.
Puducherry Chief Minister Narayanaswamy also said that the final assessment of damages is still being done, however, damages to the tune of Rs 400 crore have been suffered so far. The CM added that interim relief of Rs 50 crore will be sought from the Central government and additional amounts will be sought after compiling the damage report submitted by various departments.
